The NCSWA Professional Development Chairs would like to invite NCSWA members to a virtual seminar on fact-checking, delivered by award-winning science journalist and experienced fact-checker, Wudan Yan.

During this one-hour Zoom meeting, Wudan will discuss the business and practice of fact-checking, what writers can do to make the process smooth and easy, and how those interested in working in the field can break in. Wudan will also tell us about Factual, the fact-checking agency she launched this fall.

This seminar is geared toward book authors and writers for publications that utilize fact-checkers, those interested in working as a fact-checker, and anyone interested in fact-checking tools and resources. Additionally, editors who are concerned about factual accuracy but don't have dedicated fact-checkers as part of their newsroom can also learn tips on how to prevent embarrassment from inaccuracies. Participants will learn about best practices for annotating manuscripts for fact-checking, how fact-checkers work, and fact-checking as a job and how to train to become one. This seminar is open to NCSWA members, only.

About our speaker:

Wudan Yan has worked as a professional fact-checker specializing in science, narrative, and investigative projects for more than a decade. She has fact-checked magazine features, podcasts, documentaries, and nonfiction books. She is also a seasoned science journalist and speaker, hosts a podcast on the business of freelancing, and has just launched an agency for matching clients with vetted fact-checkers, called Factual
