New approaches in the 50-year-old Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) suggest that, despite the continued dearth of signals from other societies, there is good reason to expect that success might not be far off -- that we might find evidence of simple beings or sophisticated civilizations within a few decades. How might we do this, what would contact tell us, and what would discovering others mean to us and to our descendants?
Please join us to hear Seth Shostak, senior astronomer at the SETI Institute in Mountain View, provide the latest news from those who seek other voices in the cosmos. Shostak, author of "Confessions of an Alien Hunter" (National Geographic) and three other books, hosts the SETI Institute's popular weekly science radio show, newly rechristened "Big Picture Science." During his talk, Shostak will play excerpts from the show -- including the excruciatingly witty array of puns and skits employed by Shostak and his co-host, Molly Bentley. He'll tell us how the show is put together and how can one best make a "niche" interest -- contemporary scientific research -- interesting to Mr. and Mrs. Front Porch.
