San Francisco is famous for its hills, which lend the city its character and breathtaking views. On this tour, we’ll explore the unique qualities that have made San Francisco’s landscape what it is, while getting to know the local geology and munching our way through edible seismic science activities. We’ll visit some stellar rock formations that draw geologists from around the world, and you’ll gain a new appreciation of the city’s legendary landscape.
Showing us San Francisco's geologic wonders will be former NCSWA president Robin Marks. The founder of Discovery Street Tours, she's developed science-themed rambles through San Francisco on topics ranging from bread and cheese, to tea, to major local inventions.
The tour starts and ends at Dolores Park. The route will involve 2.5 miles of walking, including stairs and several sustained uphill climbs, over 2.5 hours.
Well-behaved dogs are welcome, as are children over the age of 10 who can handle the mileage and time.
Bring water and wear comfortable shoes. Several edible geology models will be available to consume, but those who want more sustenance should bring their own snacks.
Afterward, consider joining the group for a meal at a Mission District restaurant. Or bring a lunch and enjoy eating in Dolores Park.
