Your cells are getting older as you read this. And as they age, or senesce, the older cells stop dividing. Based largely on the research of Dr. Judith Campisi, we now know that the natural and inevitable processes of cell senescence increase your risk of developing a range of diseases, from neurodegeneration to cancer. In fact, Dr. Campisi’s research shows that cell senescence is the largest single risk factor for development of many of these diseases.
Dr. Campisi has received international recognition for her contributions to understanding the links between aging cells and disease. Her lab has found evidence that senescent cells can disrupt normal tissue functions and drive the progression of cancer over time. Senescent cells also promote inflammation, which is a common feature of all major age-related diseases.
She leads labs at both the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the Buck Institute for Research on Aging. She’ll speak about her lab’s most recent research, and also about how the research advances might lead to biotech products to slow down cell senescence and dodge at least some diseases.
